SPECIALLY DEVELOPED FOR CHILDREN IN PREP TO YEAR 2

Learn how to make the most of your fruit and vegetable scraps by growing new plants. In this activity you will learn about the lifecycle of plants and what they need to grow and discover some fantastic propagation techniques which will have you growing your own plants in no time at all. Reduce landfill, explore fun facts about fruit and vegetables, and get a start on your very own fruit and vegetable garden.

Once you have purchased your ticket please keep your receipt as proof of payment.  Please note that we require minimum numbers to run this session.  If minimum numbers are not met, we will contact you to arrange for rescheduling of your session.  You will be emailed a list of materials to have ready for the session as well as a link to our classroom at least 48hrs before the lesson is scheduled to begin.  Please ensure you have a stable internet connection as well as a webcam and mic (if you want the session to be interactive).

MATERIALS LIST - please ensure participants have all materials or a suitable alternative

  • Paper cups – 10 or more
  • Plastic cups or glass jars
  • Pencil
  • Garden soil, compost, or fine potting mix – to fill cups
  • Plastic plate
  • Large spoon or small hand trowel to transfer soil
  • Permanent marker
  • Jug of water
  • Tray to work over
  • Vegetable and fruit scraps which may be used to regrow plants.  Please ensure your child has at least one item from each category below
  • - tomato or capsicum, cut in half, seeds inside
  • - lettuce, celery, or bok choi, bottom 5cm
  • - spring onion, bottom 5cm including roots
  • - carrot or beetroot, top 3cm including stem, if any
  • - potato or sweet potato, thickly cut skin pieces containing eyes
  • You my want to provide your child with other fruit and vegetable scraps which they may be able to grow.  We will do our best to show them how to grow these.  Examples include ginger, garlic, onion bottom, pumpkin seeds, apple core, peach/apricot stone, orange seeds, beans, basil etc.
